OUR STORY
THE PATH WE'VE TAKEN:
The original BrickStreet Theatre began in 1973 with its inaugural performance of Pure As the Driven Snow. The volunteer theatre company produced one show a year through 1986 when the group took a hiatus. In 1999, the company revived for two productions: the summer musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and A Christmas Carol. After another brief hiatus, the group produced three movies –one per year–in 2005, 2007, 2008.
BrickStreet’s most recent revival began in the summer of 2015 when a small group of theatre lovers came together for a summer production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel. From then, the company presented three mainstage shows per year (a spring play, a summer musical, a Christmas play or musical) and its BST Kids Summer Camps. In 2017, it became an official 501(c)(3) organization and found a homebase in its downtown BrickStreet on Clark location. Pre-production and small shows occurred there with mainstage shows presented in the Boman Fine Arts Center.
Thanks to the hard work of early leaders and support from our generous patrons, BrickStreet Theatre was able to weather the Covid-19 closures without major stress. The board took that time away from production to build their vision of a bigger company offering more experiences to children and adults of the North Iowa and Southern Minnesota area. In October 2021, BrickStreet moved into a much larger space on Highway 69 South, expanding their season offerings and ability to host events as well as space to build and store set pieces, props, and a growing costume library.
In November of 2021, a Capital Campaign was launched to renovate the Highway 69 space to be the best home for BrickStreet Theatre that it can be. New public restrooms, an office for the artistic director, and the first round of new stage lights have been financed and are almost completed. You can learn more about our capital campaign progress and how you can get involved under the “Who We Are” tab (coming soon).
