Our town

Our Town by Thornton Wilder is a Pulitzer Prize-winning drama of life in a small town named Grover's Corners, New Hampshire. This American classic depicts the fullness of life played out in three acts called: Daily Life, Love & Marriage, and Death & Eternity. It’s storyline follows two families–the Gibbs and the Webbs–as their children grow, fall in love, marry, and face some of life’s most daunting moments.

Our Town asks timeless questions about love, relationships, and death. Playwright Wilder accomplishes this by using unique theatrical techniques such as an omniscient narrator (a character called the Stage Manager), “breaking the fourth wall” (actors sometimes speak to the audience), no set or props (save for a few items Wilder specifically allows), and metatheatrical events (characters go back in time to relive life as with Dicken’s A Christmas Carol). The play continues to be one of the most produced American plays in the world. It has been said that there is at least one performance of Our Town on a stage every day, someplace in the world. If you’ve not seen it yet, this is your opportunity.

BrickStreet’s cast features 23 actors who span seven decades of life. They drive to rehearsals from seven area communities: Forest City, Garner, Lake Mills, Buffalo Center, Clear Lake, Mason City, and Albert Lea.
